Woman dies in glider crash, pilot taken to hospital

A woman died in a glider accident at a rural airport, and the pilot was hospitalized with serious injuries.

The single glider crash occurred at Tunbridge in Tasmania’s southern interior shortly before 2pm AEDT on Sunday.

Tasmania Police confirmed in a statement that the woman, in her early 50s, died from her injuries at the scene.

A Tasmanian man in his 60s who was flying the two-seat glider was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital with serious injuries.

Tasmanian Police Superintendent Aleena Crack said the man and woman were part of a group that included the woman’s husband who was at the private airport.

“There was a larger group of people at the airport at the time and this is obviously a tragic outcome for these families and friends,” Inspector Crack said.

While the police are investigating the cause of the accident, emergency teams are also at the scene.
