Woman in her 30s fights for life after being stabbed in the neck in ‘unprovoked’ attack in street as man in his 20s is arrested

A woman is fighting for her life after being stabbed in the neck during an ‘unprovoked attack’ on a street in Birmingham.

The victim, in his 30s, suffered ‘serious injuries’ in the attack, which occurred shortly before 9pm last night.

It was learned that the condition of the woman who was taken to the hospital was critical.

A man in his 20s was arrested near the scene and is currently in police custody.

Detective Inspector James Nix, of West Midlands Police, said: ‘We believe this was an unprovoked attack and we are trying to understand why it happened.

‘We will have officers in the area today to continue our investigation and provide reassurance.

‘We are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.’

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: ‘A man is in custody following a stabbing in Birmingham last night.

‘We were called to Smallbrook Queensway shortly before 9pm following reports of a stabbing.

‘A woman in her 30s was taken to hospital with serious neck injuries and remains in a critical condition.

‘A man in his 20s was arrested near the scene and is currently in custody.

‘Our officers are carrying out inquiries at the scene and we are trying to establish the exact circumstances of what happened.’
