Woman Kills Twins, Ends Life

Hyderabad:A 27-year-old woman died by committing suicide after killing her two-year-old twin children, allegedly as a result of her husband’s frequent harassment. Sailakshmi, a homemaker from Nuzvid in Andhra Pradesh’s Eluru district, married IT worker Anil Kumar in August 2022. The couple had twin children, a son and a daughter.

According to police, the incident took place at Phase 1 Padmaraonagar in Balanagar around 4 am on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Anil was preparing to go to Visakhapatnam for a family visit at his brother’s house in Miyapur. Sailakshmi reportedly smothered her children with a pillow before committing suicide. A taxi driver passing by saw him covered in blood and unresponsive and notified the building owner, who in turn notified his family.

Her father Marraiah Babu told the police that Sailakshmi was suffering emotional distress due to her husband’s harassment. The couple recently learned that their son has autism, which further strained the relationship.

“Anil was often taunting her, saying she should not give birth to the child,” the complainant said. Balanagar police have registered a case against Anil Kumar for abetting suicide and are continuing the investigation. “He has not been detained yet, but legal action will be taken,” an official said. The bodies were taken to Gandhi Hospital for autopsy.

Manuu students demand Union poll

Hyderabad: Almost a year after the last Students’ Union election at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) was suspended, students say the absence of an elected body has weakened representation and accountability on the campus. The administration’s long-term silence created disappointment among students.

The elections, which were previously scheduled to be held on September 24, 2024, were canceled following protests over the food and facilities of hostels. The administration claimed that “unrest prevailed” but the students claimed that the protest was peaceful and was being used as an excuse to postpone the elections indefinitely.

“Without an elected body, even minor complaints like broken lights or canteen problems never reach decision-makers,” said Talha Mannan, a graduate student and former union member. “It’s frustrating to stay silent.”

Students say it returned to normal months ago, but the administration has not announced a new schedule. Reports indicate that the previous union disbanded after just 82 days in office. Some claim that the administration prefers a “quieter campus” and sees the Union as a challenge to authority.

Faculty members shared the concern. “When students don’t elect their representatives, fundamental perspectives are lost at committee tables,” said a professor who asked to remain anonymous. “It reduces accountability and decision-making.”

Although the university has not released an official comment, students say the election calendar should be announced soon to rebuild trust. Talha said, “Extending this any further will damage the trust and democratic identity of the university.”

Infested spices were seized in Hyd raids

Hyderabad:The state food safety department found serious hygiene lapses, including rodent and pest infestation, expired stocks and unlabelled products, during raids on Srivari Spices and Foods Ltd in Jalpally and Divine Spices in Bandlaguda Jagir, both in Rangareddy district.

Inspectors also noted the absence of FoSTAC-trained inspectors and the lack of medical records for staff. About 15kg of black pepper and 18kg of bay leaves contaminated with mouse droppings and unlabelled curry leaf powder in violation of the Food Safety and Standards (Labeling and Display) Regulations, 2020 were seized. Samples were sent for laboratory analysis and improvement notices were issued.

Over 30 spice manufacturing and repackaging units were inspected across the state. While the food safety and standards authority of India (FSSAI) has temporarily paused its national initiative, Telangana’s enforcement teams are continuing checks at the state level “to maintain public confidence in food safety”, a GHMC official said.

GHMC has also extended inspections to supermarkets and dark store warehouses. In recent raids on more than 40 stores, authorities found expired products, poor pest control and a lack of hygiene certificates for staff. Once test results confirm contamination, legal action will be taken, including license suspension or prosecution, authorities said.

Dismissed staff committed suicide at work

Hyderabad: A 44-year-old man died by suicide at his former employer’s office building in Suraram, Rajiv Gandhinagar, around 11.30 am on Tuesday. Police identified the deceased as Narsareddy Narayana Reddy, a native of Kamareddy district, who had moved to the city for work with his wife and two children. He was reportedly separated from his family due to alcohol addiction.

Two years ago, Reddy suffered fractures in both his legs when he was hit by a car near Narsapur while returning from Bodhan with company supplies. His wife Lalitha said the firm covered the cost of his treatment but later asked him to stop working. “He recovered and rejoined, but was fired a month ago. Unable to find a job, he became depressed and committed suicide,” he said.

Workers found his body near a tree at work and notified the police. Following her accident, Lalitha and her relatives staged a protest outside the company, alleging negligence and lack of support. “No one reached out to help him,” he said. Suraram police have registered a case of death under suspicious circumstances and are investigating.

Cartographer, ACB net assistant

Karimnagar:Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested Sircilla government mandal surveyor Madishetti Venugopal and his special assistant Sura Vamshi for accepting a bribe of $20,000 to process the land survey report.

Venugopal had requested Rs 30,000 from a local resident for a survey in Chinna Bonalu village. After completing the survey, he first collected Rs 10,000 on October 13 and claimed the balance before submitting the report. The complainant approached the ACB, which laid a trap and caught Venugopal’s assistant taking the remaining Rs 20,000 on Tuesday.

The coin was seized and both were taken into custody. ACB officials said the duo will be produced before the court after completion of formalities.
