The woman, who was brutally stabbed 29 times by her violent ex-partner and was forced to hide in the closet with the knife in her chest, stated that she felt “great relief” after his death in prison.
Steven Wood attempted to kill Martina Turner, known as Tina, in a brutal attack in her kitchen in May 2021. Despite the severity of her injuries, the brave mother of three miraculously survived.
Tina managed to escape this horrific incident by hiding in a closet to call for help using her mobile phone, despite having a knife in her chest. Emergency services managed to save him and captured Wood, who was sentenced to at least 12 years in prison. The news comes as violent convicted immigrants defy deportation to continue their disgusting crime spree in the UK.
Wood, who was serving his sentence at HMP Frankland, died last week, Chronicle Live reported. Speaking about his death, Tina, 57, said: “It’s a huge relief to be honest. Anyone who has been a victim of domestic violence knows their partner can come back into their life; that fear was always there. It’s a relief it’s not there anymore.”
It’s not over for the victim when the abuser goes to prison. “After carrying out the horrific attack four years ago, Wood fled their home in Gateshead and locked the door behind him, forcing emergency workers to break the window to get to Tina.” Mirror.
He was immediately taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle; Here doctors treated wounds to his heart, spine and legs.
Wood was also taken to RVI after being found by police under the Redheugh Bridge. It is believed that he tried to end his own life. Tina was hospitalized for six weeks and underwent multiple surgeries. He continues to struggle with both the physical consequences of the attack and the mental pain it caused.
Wood later admitted attempted murder and was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 12 years. “Tina, who is originally from Germany but has lived in the UK for more than three decades, explained that she remains scared despite her attacker being behind bars.”
He told me he had to ‘finish me’.
“This will stay with you for the rest of your life,” he said. “I still can’t go out on my own.
“Every Thursday I go shopping on my street with an old gentleman, and he always stands behind me in the queue.
“I still sit with my back against the wall in restaurants, and I still can’t go into crowded places with lots of people. Trauma happens every day.”
Tina said she was already tormented by the thought that Wood was nearing the end of his minimum term and was frightened by the prospect of eventually being released.
“I was considering walking away from my friends, my family, and everyone I knew because the fear was still present,” she said. “I was afraid not only for me, but also for the other women he would meet. No one could be safe when he was out there.”
“I would have fought to keep him in as long as possible because he was a danger to others. It’s very comforting that he won’t be able to do this to another woman in the future.”
Wood was hospitalized from Frankland, a high-security prison in County Durham, and died on September 17. An independent investigation into his death is currently being carried out by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.
A Prison Service spokesman said: “Steven Wood died in hospital while serving a sentence at HMP Frankland on September 17. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.”
