Kerala Tourism has tasked the Ernakulam District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) to conduct a ₹2.97-crore beach tour connecting Kuzhipilly, Cherai and Munambam beaches on Vypeen island.

The long-awaited tour was first proposed in 2017 as part of a broader plan to promote beach tourism in the Ernakulam district. Tourism sources said the three beaches are being developed as part of a Rs 4.50-crore project that aims to enhance the infrastructure of a total of nine beaches along a 25-km corridor from Puthu Vypeen at one end to Munambam on the Ernakulam-Thrissur border.

They attributed the delay to problems in obtaining Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearances and other technical reasons. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly enhance the experience of tourists visiting the beaches in Ernakulam district, especially as the naval incursion has reduced the attractiveness of Fort Kochi beach.

Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company (KEL), which will carry out the project, will renew the existing infrastructure within the scope of the development of the coastline. Toilets, raincoats, buffets and a children’s playground will also be built. It was learned that the work on Cherai beach started a week ago.

Ernakulam DTPC secretary Lijo Jose said tourists, including from other states, continue to flock to Cherai beach despite sea erosion caused by factors such as climate change. “Kuzhipilly, a recently developed beach, stands out for its numerous casuarina trees and floating bridges stretching along the beach. Hence, it has become a popular spot for photo shoots. The local community and panchayat members are wholeheartedly extending their cooperation to ensure the maintenance of the beach,” he said.

Munambam, as its name suggests, is an estuary. In addition to water sports activities, the walking path, Chinese fishing nets and the harbor also attract the attention of many visitors. Once the infrastructure is strengthened, beach tour is expected to revitalize these destinations and bring new vitality. Within the scope of the project, walking paths will also be illuminated. Work covering three beaches is expected to be completed by February 2027. Mr. Jose added that lifeguards as well as equipment have already been deployed in Munambam and Cherai to ensure the safety of visitors.
