Households urged to stockpile food and medicine before Sunday | UK | News

Households in parts of the UK are being warned to stock up on food and essential medicines this weekend before severe weather sets in on Sunday.
A yellow weather warning for possible flooding and a yellow alert for heavy rain has been issued by the Met Office in parts of the UK and is in effect for a full 36 hours, from 6am on Sunday to 6pm on Monday.
While flooding will not affect every area in the forecast, areas at risk of flooding are urged to check their local forecast and prepare accordingly.
The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for Cumbria, but has also issued four other yellow weather warnings for heavy rain for northern England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
As part of the amber warning, it said: “Very heavy and persistent rainfall is expected to cause some flooding and transport disruptions.
“Persistent rainfall across north-west England will be particularly heavy in parts of Cumbria. Widespread accumulations of over 100mm of rainfall are expected across the warning area throughout Sunday and Monday. Over 200mm of rain is possible in some locations, particularly in the west of the region.”
In advice issued alongside the warning, the Met Office said: “Preparing a flood kit can protect your home or business from loss or damage caused by flooding. Your flood kit includes: insurance and other important documents, a flashlight and spare batteries, a first aid kit, prescription medicines and supplies to care for your family members or pets, and warm, waterproof clothing, blankets, food and water.”
The National Flood Forum is urging households to stock four essential items in any flood emergency kit.
Primarily documents such as insurance documents and other important documents. Then electrical products such as mobile phones, chargers and battery packs.
Households should also have an emergency credit card on hand to cover unexpected emergency expenses.
Finally, medication – prescription medication or drug forms.
NFF says if you have children, milk and baby food, sterilized bottles and spoons, wipes, diaper bags, baby wipes, and your favorite toy should also be included in the kit.
Other items households should consider include a wind-up or battery-powered radio and flashlight, bottled water, a first aid kit, and nonperishable foods like cereal bars, as well as blankets and warm clothing.
