DoJ sues LA sheriff for processing concealed carry gun licenses too slowly | US news

On Tuesday, the US Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the Şerif department of the Los Angeles district and claimed that he had violated the constitution by acting very slowly to process arms licenses for people who want to carry secret weapons.
The Ministry of Justice Department of Civil Rights, Los Angeles Federal Court filed a complaint, the Sheriff Department of the License “Unreasonable Delays”, the Ministry of Justice Department of Civil Rights Department of Civil Rights violated the right to carry arms outside the house, he said.
Public Prosecutor Pam Bondi, explaining the case, said, “The second change, the law that obeys the basic constitutional right of citizens to carry the right to carry the right to carry.” He said. “Los Angeles County may not like this right, but the Constitution does not allow them to violate them.”
The spokesman for the Sheriff Department objected to the allegation by saying that they have committed all secret transport weapons applications in accordance with the state and local laws.
Spokesperson Nicole Nishida said in a statement, “It is important to clarify that the CCW unit of LASD, unlike the statistics and information specified by the Ministry of Justice, permitted significantly to a significant extent,” he said.
The case comes after the Ministry of Justice has started to analyze the confidential transportation permission applications in the district as of last March.
The Ministry of Justice said, “Almost two months after notifying the department’s investigation, the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department has made negotiations to approve the licenses two years after the sheriff department released only two approval from more than 8,000 applications and receiving the completed application”.
According to the complaint, the sheriff department waits an average of 281 days to start processing and violates a California law that requires the first examination within 90 days.
Nishida, the Ministry of Justice’s law enforcemental force, in May 2023, a manual, paper -based system, a more aerodynamic online platform was given in the early stages of the transition, he said. The current sheriff accumulated a 10,000 applications reduced to 3,200.
The department also works with the district to finance more positions for the unit that confirms the applications.
Nishida, “We are determined to handle all applications with a fair, immediately and balanced approach,” he said. “A fair and impartial examination of our efforts will show that it does not make a pattern or practice of deprived individuals of the department’s second change rights.”
Nishida, despite the shortage of personnel, the department has approved the application of more than 19,000 secret transport weapons since 2020. Since the beginning of 2025, the department said it has allowed more than 5,000 permission with 2,722 new applications.
The case wants to take a permanent measure that requires the sheriff department to give secret transport licenses in accordance with the laws.
California Governor Gavin Newsom positioned himself as a leader in weapon control and said he would force it for more strict arrangements.
In January, a Federal Court of Appeal prevented a state law from entering into force, most people, most of them, forbidding firearms. This decision, which was attractive, was held in the previous decision by the US regional judge Cormac Carney, which prevented the law. Carney said that he violated the second change and that the arms rights groups were contrary to the constitution.
The law will prohibit people from carrying secret weapons to 26 species, including public parks and playgrounds, churches, banks and zoo.
