‘Worst list ever’: Karl Stefanovic slams decision to crown Bate Bay in Sydney as Australia’s best beach

It has been named Australia’s best beach for 2026, but not everyone is happy with this choice.
The list of the country’s top 10 beaches was ranked among 12,000 Australian beaches and 130 points of evaluation ranking criteria.
After decades of researching and visiting Australia’s various beaches, Brad Farmer AM gave Bate Bay, south of Sydney, the prestigious number one spot.
But this spot is not a single beach; It also covers nine other beaches along the Sutherland Shire’s coastline.
“This year’s list is a celebration of the quiet, soulful spots that define our coastal identity and offer a true escape for those looking to venture a little further afield,” Mr Farmer said.
Pinky Beach took the second place in the ranking, followed by Beachcomber Cove, Tallow Beach, Hellfire Bay, Godfrey Beach, Inskip Point, Mount Martha, Smokey Bay and Ellery Creek Big Hole.
The best choice has already sparked controversy.
“I think this is the worst list I’ve ever seen,” Karl Stefanovic said in an interview with Trade and Tourism Minister Don Farrell.
“It’s a fantastic beach. I disagree with you on that,” Mr Farrell replied.
Bate Bay is a 5km stretch of nine pristine beaches in the Sutherland Shire, including Greenhills, Wanda, Elouera, North Cronulla and Gunnamatta Bay.

“This great honor highlights the natural beauty of our coastline, easy access to local public transport, surfing culture, vibrant lifestyle and strong community ties,” said Sutherland Shire mayor Jack Boyd.
Tourists have always had a love affair with Australia’s beaches; Many people flock to the country to see the beautiful waters and warm sands.
“Our beaches are just one of the many attractions that bring international visitors to our state… last year our visitor economy exceeded $59.4 billion and being named the home of Australia’s Best Beach in 2026 is a huge boost to attracting more visitors,” said NSW Tourism Minister Steve Kamper.
