B&M issue recall for baby formula sold in stores nationwide: ‘Aptamil and Kenda products affected’

B&M has recalled two brands of baby food on the grounds that they have expired and may be unsafe for consumption.
Consumers who purchased Aptamil and Kendamil from any of the chain’s 764 stores were warned that some products had expired.
The recall last month was for Aptamil First Baby Milk Powder (800g) product code 348054, Aptamil Follow-on Milk (4x200ml) product code 422087 and Aptamil Follow-on Milk (700g) product code 422056.
The recall also includes two Kendamil products; Kendamil Baby Milk (800g) product code 422378 and Kendamil First Milk (250ml) product code 422381.
B&M’s recall notice states: ‘If you purchased any of these products with an expiration date of 08/10 or earlier, please do not use the product.
‘Please return the item to your local store immediately. A refund or replacement will be provided.
‘We apologize for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
‘Please contact your local store’s team for further assistance. If you have any further questions, please contact Customer Services on 0330 838 9000.’

Last month, a customer complained that the baby food he purchased from his local branch had been out of date for almost a year.
B&M apologized for the error and said it “fell short of the high standards we set”.
The retailer said it was investigating how the product ended up on shelves in some stores and recalled the formula last month due to a ‘date issue’.
Advice on the Kendamil website asks customers to always check the expiry date of formula, as expired milk ‘may not be safe’ for babies.
The advice is: ‘Open a new can of food and check the expiry date before using.
‘You don’t want to accidentally use expired food; It may lose its nutritional value and may not be safe for your little one.
‘If you find an expired box, don’t risk it. Throw it away to keep your baby safe and healthy.’
Meanwhile, Aptamil manufacturer Danone said ensuring quality and safety in its products was its ‘number one priority’.

The brand added that baby food is tightly regulated and that ‘these products should not have been sold’ in the first place.
Promotional discounts on baby food have been banned under UK regulations to promote breastfeeding, which the NHS says is healthier for children.
A spokesperson for Danone UK and Ireland said: ‘Danone UK and Ireland has been advised that ready-to-drink liquids of expired Aptamil First Baby Milk Powders and Follow-on Milk are being discounted by B&M.
‘The quality and safety of our products is our number one priority to ensure parents can trust them and these products should not have been sold.
‘In the UK, formula milk is highly regulated and we comply with those regulations.
‘We have a strict global policy on Baby Food Marketing Standards which all our employees, brands and retail customers must comply with. This standard prohibits discounts on baby food.
‘When we became aware we contacted B&M and the retailer immediately removed the outdated product and marketing material.’
B&M has been contacted for further comment.
