Woman killed and three injured in crash which closed busy Kent bridge

A woman in her 30s died and three people were injured in a major crash that closed the busy Kent bridge overnight.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after a gray Kia collided with a BMW on the A249 near the Gap of Sheppey. Police, paramedics and firefighters intervened in the incident at 23.20 on Friday, but it was announced that a woman died at the scene.

Three more people injured in the collision were taken to hospital and treated. It was stated that a man and a woman who were taken to a hospital in London were in serious condition. Another man was taken to a local hospital.

The road, which was closed throughout the night, was reopened at around 08:00 on Saturday morning.

Motorists heading to the Isle of Sheppey have been diverted from the A249 at Key Street and are asked to travel via Sheppey Road and Kingsferry Bridge while the road is closed.

Witnesses reported seeing black smoke and being told to stay in their vehicles with the windows closed, Kent Online reported.

Officers from Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) launched an investigation into the incident.

They are asking for any witnesses who just saw the fatal crash or the vehicles to come forward.

They are also appealing for anyone with dashcam footage to contact officers.
