Young men not reading books but publishers aren’t helping

Last week, I was sitting in my hotel room in Tasmania when the news that Australians read less than ever before.

Accordingly New data The most common group of regular readers from the Australian Statistical Office are now old women (48 percent) compared to only 10.1 percent of men aged 15 to 24 years. Considering that I was at a book event where the crowd was predominantly female and older, it seemed to watch.

Although he was now a full -time writer, I wasn’t a growing book type. It wasn’t until I met Irvine Galce Trainspotting In the mid -20s, the reading flame was fired. I jumped to Raymond Carver, Chuck Palhuniuk, George Saunders and Charles Bukowski from Welsh. My horizons have expanded since then, but they were the first literary love I had.

Reading is sometimes an experience that makes me away from the world and relieves me when I feel that there is no one else.

It is well known that the love of reading is sitting in this nature feeding venny diagram. So why do young men read less? Maybe the podcasts are guilty. A book is something to consume, yes, but something to sit and endure; To give time and effort. In the modern era, perhaps podcasts, youtube, reddit forums and pennants have become this – what is easier to consume was given a window of entertainment.

Or is it illuminated with the chick? A number of generations of popular female writer Zeitgeist have seized Zeitgeist, and now the new generation of romance and SMIT writers moved to a mass imitation thanks to the social media. Five of Australia’s 10 best -selling books in 2024 fit into this category (others two cookbooks, one children’s book, self -help book and John Farnham’s memoirs).

The percentage of men who will buy any book is very small. Liane Moriarty or Sarah J. Maas is likely to receive or recommend (third and sixth in the best -selling list) even smaller than your friends. Now it has become a cycle of supply and demand. No man reads books, so no book is pushed to them. I’m not saying courage, no “dick-lit” (Copyright: B Jack).
