Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday that a trilateral meeting between the United States, Ukraine and Russia will be held in the United Arab Emirates starting Friday, January 23; This is an important step in long-running efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Stating that the talks will continue until Saturday, Zelenskyy sent a strong message to Russia and said that it should be ready to compromise.
USA, Ukraine and Russia will hold a meeting
Zelenskyy said, “Ukraine is working with complete honesty and determination, and this brings results. Russia also needs to be ready to end this war, stop this aggression. This will be the first tripartite meeting in the Emirates. It will be tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.”
Speaking in a determined tone, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine was ready to end the war, emphasized that the country was preparing for this moment, and warned Russia to be ready for concrete steps towards peace. He further said that “documents aimed at ending this war” are “nearly ready,” and stressed on the fact that US and Ukrainian teams are working almost constantly to finalize plans for peace.
Zelenskyy condemns Europe’s inaction
In his speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) held in Davos, Switzerland, Zelenskyy made a harsh speech after almost four years of war with Russia, harshly criticizing Europe for being “lost” and asking for help from US President Donald Trump for failing to unite to defend itself.
Citing the current context of Trump’s claim regarding Greenland, the Ukrainian President accused Europe of failing to act and instead implicating Trump. He said: “Europe appears lost in trying to persuade the US president to change, rather than leading the defense of freedom around the world, especially as America’s focus shifts elsewhere.”
On the sidelines of the WEF, Zelenskyy and Trump spoke privately just before we delivered his speech.
“President Trump loves who he is and says he loves Europe, but he will not listen to that kind of Europe. Europe is still more like geography, history, a tradition, not a real political power or a great power,” Zelenskyy added. Emphasis is placed on Europe’s lack of political will and power and its strong voice against its enemies.
“Some Europeans are really strong, that’s true, but many say ‘we must stand strong’ and they always want someone else to tell them how long they should stand strong, preferably until the next election,” the Ukrainian President said, implying that Europe is counting on taking instructions from Donald Trump. he said.
Zelenskyy began his speech by describing Europe’s inaction that has left Ukraine in a situation that feels like it is experiencing “Mole Day.”
He reminds Europe of taking strong action timely, saying “Just last year here in Davos, I ended my speech with the words, ‘Europe needs to know how to defend itself.’ A year has passed and nothing has changed. We are still in a situation where I have to say the same words. “United, we are truly invincible, and Europe can and must be a global power, not a slow reactor,” he added.
Zelenskyy discussed the Greenland issue
Zelenskyy also condemned the small number of troops NATO sent to Greenland following Trump’s takeover allegations. Without directly shaming Trump, he attacked European leaders for “waiting for America to calm down” on Greenland and for putting other pressing global issues on the back burner.
“If you send 30 or 40 soldiers to Greenland, what is it for? What message does it send? What message does it send to Putin? To China? And more importantly, what message does it send to Denmark? Either you declare that European bases will protect the region from Russia and China… or you run the risk of not being taken seriously, because 30 or 40 soldiers cannot protect anything.”
Speaking about the Iranian protests and the resulting violence, Zelenskyy said, “The protests in Iran were talked about a lot, but they were drowned in blood. The world did not help the Iranian people enough.”
