Ex-Knick Charles Oakley owes MSG $642,000 in attorney fees, judge rules

Charles Oakley, who collected a paycheck from James Dolan and the New York Knicks for nearly 10 years, needs to pay them back.
A federal judge ruled that Oakley owes the Madison Square Garden Company nearly $642,000 in attorney fees in an ongoing lawsuit between the two parties.
The legal troubles stemmed from Oakley’s highly publicized ejection during a Knicks game in early 2017 after he struck a security guard near owner James Dolan’s courtside seat.

“Charles Oakley came to the game tonight and behaved in an extremely inappropriate and completely abusive manner,” the Knicks said. in a statement In that case. “He was taken out and is currently being detained by the New York City Police Department. He was a great Knick and we hope he gets some help soon.”
The team claimed that Oakley was constantly yelling at Dolan, but Oakley denied this and said that he was asked to leave the arena for no reason shortly after taking his seat for the game. He has not returned to Madison Square Garden since, despite the team’s recent revival.
MSG lawyers attempted to retrieve Oakley’s deleted messages, resulting in charges.
“The court rejected many of MSG’s grossly inflated wage claims,” Oakley’s attorney, Valdi Licul, said in a statement. he said. Front Office Sports. “However, we disagree that MSG is entitled to any compensation and will appeal immediately.”

Last year, Oakley said Dolan’s lawyers challenged him to a game, but Dolan declined.
“They need to apologize,” he told The Associated Press. “We’ll go from there. Would (Dolan) be man enough to say that mistakes happen and that he made a mistake too?”
“Be honest,” Oakley added. “Be transparent about what you put someone through and how you changed their life. It definitely changed my life. My daughter googled me and it shows they took me out of the yard, that’s terrible. It’s hell for a kid to see that.”
Oakley is seeking damages for assault, battery and harm to his reputation after Dolan insinuated that the former NBA player had a substance abuse problem.

“He is both physically and verbally abusive. He might have a problem with alcohol, we don’t know, right?” Dolan he said then.
The Knicks are among the favorites to win the NBA Finals for the first time since 1973.
