100 brawling youths disrupt Paniyiri festival, assault patrons
Celebrations of the 50th anniversary of one of Queensland’s biggest multicultural festivals have been disrupted by a massive brawl involving 100 young people.
Police were called to the Paniyiri Greek Festival at Musgrave Park in South Brisbane just before 9pm on Saturday after reports of a large disturbance involving about 100 young people near Edmondstone Street.
It was claimed that young people attacked the festival participants.
Police and security managed to disperse the crowd and a small number of people were treated for minor injuries by first aid teams.
Police said no formal complaints or arrests were made after the incident.
Paniyiri is an annual event celebrating Greek culture, held in an inner-city park over two days.
More than 50,000 people were expected to attend this year’s event, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Brisbane festival.
