Elon Musk celebrated a major victory and potential record payday on Thursday after Tesla shareholders overwhelmingly approved his extraordinary compensation package at the company’s annual general meeting. The vote gives Musk the chance to become the world’s first trillionaire if he meets a set of ambitious growth targets.
The approval, backed by more than 75 percent of investors, came despite significant opposition from large institutional shareholders who argued the deal amounted to excessive pay for senior executives.

Moments after the results were announced, Elon Musk took the stage, grinned and marked Tesla’s signature fashion milestone: dancing alongside his humanoid robot Optimus.
Gratitude and Vision: “I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported the shareholder vote. I appreciate it very much,” he told the crowd. Musk called the approval “the beginning of a new chapter” for the company.
“Bangers, Not Snooze Festivals“: Comparing the meeting with others, Musk said: “Other shareholder meetings are postponed meetings, but ours is very loud. Look at this. This is so sick.”
Stock Reaction: Tesla shares rose nearly 1% in after-hours trading following the release of fourth-quarter results.
The Path to Trillionaire Status
The approved package directly ties Musk’s compensation to the achievement of several bold operational and financial benchmarks over the next decade. If these goals are achieved, Musk, currently the richest person in the world, could acquire an additional 12 percent stake in Tesla.

The total deal valuation could be an estimated $1 trillion, based on successfully increasing the company’s market cap from approximately $1.5 trillion today to $8.5 trillion.
Key Milestones Included in the Payment Package require Tesla to:
- We sell 20 million vehicles a year.
- Put 1 million robotaxis on the road.
- Sell 1 million humanoid robots.
Board Defends Package Amid Opposition Tesla’s board has strongly defended Musk’s record-breaking pay package, arguing that his leadership is essential to the company’s innovation and expansion.
They warned shareholders that rejecting the deal would put Musk at risk of leaving the company. The vote went ahead despite opposition from several major groups, including Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, which raised concerns about the size and structure of executive compensation.
