13 students fall ill after breakfast at Gurukul in Gadwal

At least 13 children living at the Scheduled Tribes Gurukul in Jogulamba Gadwal district fell ill after having breakfast in the hostel’s dining hall on Tuesday.

It was stated that the condition of all affected children is stable and they are under follow-up.

According to the hostel manager at Gurukul, students were served upma with roasted chickpea powder and ragi jawa for breakfast. While some students ate the food, soon others complained about the worms in the upma and were asked to throw away the entire meal. They were given bananas and biscuits and sent to school.

After reaching the school, the students complained of abdominal pain, vomiting and fainted after feeling dizzy. All of them were taken to the Government Hospital and first aid was administered.

Videos of the incident show school staff taking students to the ward and giving them IV fluids.

Doctors caring for the students suspect that food contamination may have caused this situation. It was stated that the condition of all the students was stable.

Speaking to the press at the hospital, the students said that they found worms in the upma served and that this was the reason for their condition.
