19 dead after earthquake off Mindanao coast

Earthquakes are common in the Philippines, which lies on the geologically unstable “ring of fire.” While most of these earthquakes were small and passed relatively calmly, some proved deadly: Last September, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the central Visayas region, killing more than 70 people.
