The Mayor of Greenland’s capital admitted that he is now afraid of the day when American warships will appear on the horizon. Avaaraq Olsen said it was clear that fear among the Nuuk community of 20,000 people was increasing day by day.
The civilian leader issued a personal message to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who is trying to coordinate NATO’s response to the growing crisis in Greenland by sending a large security force to persuade him to do so. Donald Trump He said US intervention was not necessary. The mayor said: “Denmark or others are making plans and announcements about Greenland, but they are talking about us without us. So if Keir Starmer wants to plan something like this, or even talk about it, he should definitely involve the residents of Greenland.”

Speaking in her office in Nuuk City Hall, Ms Olsen points to the fjord visible from the window and says: “Yesterday I was supposed to go for a walk along our coastline path.
“It’s always a calming feeling when you listen to the ocean. So I was standing and it was getting dark, then a boat came along, it was dark and there were no lights on.
“And suddenly I wondered, will they (the US) come without lights?
“Even though I’m the one telling everyone to calm down, I also understand that people are scared.
“I really understand why people look to the sky and the ocean for the future.”
Olsen admits that she is normally cautious in dealing with the media, but she has cast aside her caution due to the seriousness of the US threat.
He claims people are being distressed by “fake news” spread directly by Donald Trump and his senior team, led by his son Donald Jnr, who visited Nuuk last January.

He said: “I would tell Donald Trump I don’t want him here. That would show us another way to disrespect us if he came.”
“I really think they should stop lying about Greenland, like when you said there were Russian and Chinese ships circling Greenland somewhere.
“Such statements by the state also harm the people in Greenland. The lies really need to stop.”
Ms. Olsen said the elderly were traumatized by their fear of enemy ships because they assumed that when a powerful head of state made a statement it would be true.
When Donald Trump Jnr and his senior ally Charlie Kirk, who was later murdered in a world-shattering crime, visited Nuuk last January, Ms Olsen claimed a new round of fake news broke out
He said: “It was a circus, or maybe it was a shit show.”
He said Trump Jnr’s men were rounding up unemployed men who habitually gathered near the city’s shopping centre.
They were all offered a free lunch at a swanky restaurant and then asked to wear MAGA hats — which resulted in photos being distributed showing the Tump team arriving in Greenland on the “Trump Force 1” jet being given a wonderful welcome by the Greenlanders.
Ms Olsen claims Trump Jnr’s visit brought about a situation where schoolchildren were given $100 notes, presumably to win their hearts and minds, and locals were outraged.
He said: “These influencers were coming and handing out $100 bills to kids. They even went into schools, knocked on classroom doors, wanted to interview kids and teenagers, it was outrageous what was happening.”
Ms Olsen said the Greenlanders’ protests led US Vice President JD Vance to abandon plans to come to Nuuk, opting instead to visit the US military base Pituffik, where he could check messages.
He said: “As Greenlanders we are not very outspoken about our opinions and it takes a lot for us to show that.
The existential threat to Greenland has shaken its people in a similar way to the Coronavirus crisis.
Ms Olsen said: “I remember when Corona first hit, it felt surreal, like we were in a movie. That’s exactly how we feel now.”
“It’s really hard to predict what’s going to happen next.
“People have these feelings of fear, but I also see people really just trying to live their daily lives.
“In Greenland, we laugh when we go through the hardest moments. So I think there’s a lot of laughter, even though it’s scary.”
Ms. Olsen said that the people of Greenland do not want to be Americans or Danes, they want to be free.
He said that families are already longing for the day when they will return to normal and the world’s eyes will be on them.
We are hopeful that next week’s summit with Greenlandic, Danish and American political leaders will offer an unexpected glimmer of hope.
Ms Olsen said: “Whatever happens next might give us an idea of how this will develop from here on out, because it’s so hard to imagine right now. Everything changes from day to day.”
It was revealed on Sunday that Keir Starmer is in talks with NATO allies about strengthening the West’s military presence in the Arctic to fend off Donald Trump’s threat to seize Greenland.
Downing Street said the Prime Minister was taking increasing Russian aggression in the region “extremely seriously”.
The EU is “stepping up our work” in Greenland as part of efforts to boost “Arctic security”, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told reporters.
