250,000 families to receive confirmation of £150 discount on energy bills

The Government is sending a letter to more than 250,000 families confirming whether they will get a one-off £150 discount on their energy bills this winter.

Letters will be hitting doormats across England and Wales from Tuesday after Sir Keir Starmer announced the expansion of the warm home discount scheme last year.

All households eligible for the discount should receive a letter before January; More than six million households in England, Scotland and Wales will receive help.

“This cash injection will help people manage their bills while we repair the rusting energy system we inherited,” the Prime Minister said.

“Because only through our clean energy mission can we lower everyone’s bills in the long run, while creating jobs and economic growth.”

Most eligible people will have £150 automatically deducted from their energy bills without them needing to take any action.

But some will need to provide extra information, such as a utility bill or account statement, to verify the bill payer’s name and account number to ensure they qualify for the discount. Their letters will include advice to call the helpline.

“Letters with welcome news to hundreds of thousands of families will hit doormats across the country this week,” energy secretary Ed Miliband said.

“This government is determined to solve the problem of energy affordability for families and as a result more people will be helped this winter.

“And I would urge anyone who needs to provide extra information to follow the simple steps and make sure they get money on their bills this winter.”

Ofgem’s energy price cap for a typical household in England, Scotland and Wales increased by 2 per cent from 1 October; In cold weather many people turn on the central heating.

This means that the average household paying for gas and electricity via direct debit has its energy bill rising from £1,720 to £1,755 per year.
