3 US Lawmakers Move Resolution to End Trump’s 50% Tariffs on India

Washington DC: Three members of the US House of Representatives on Friday (local time) introduced a resolution aimed at rescinding President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration that imposed tariffs of up to 50 percent on imports from India. Lawmakers called the measures “illegal” and harmful to American workers, consumers and bilateral relations.

The resolution, spearheaded by Representatives Deborah Ross, Marc Veasey and Raja Krishnamoorthi, follows a bipartisan Senate measure to end similar tariffs on Brazil and prevent the President from using emergency powers to raise import taxes.

According to the statement, the decision aims to cancel the additional 25 percent “secondary” duties imposed on India on August 27, 2025, in addition to the previous reciprocal tariffs. Together, these measures increased customs duties to 50 percent on many Indian-origin products under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

“North Carolina’s economy is deeply tied to India through trade, investment and a vibrant Indian American community,” said Congressman Ross, noting that Indian companies have invested over $1 billion in the state and created thousands of jobs, while manufacturers in North Carolina export hundreds of millions of dollars worth of goods to India each year.

“India is an important cultural, economic and strategic partner, and these illegal tariffs are a tax on North Texans who are already struggling with rising costs,” said Congressman Veasey.

Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi called the tariffs “counterproductive,” saying they disrupt supply chains, harm American workers and increase costs for consumers. He emphasized that ending tariffs would strengthen US-India economic and security cooperation.

The decision is part of a broader effort by Democrats in Congress to challenge Trump’s unilateral trade measures and restart tense relations with India. In October, Ross, Veasey, Krishnamoorthi, Congressman Ro Khanna and 19 other lawmakers called on the President to reverse tariff policies.

In early August, Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods starting August 1, and then imposed another 25 percent increase days later, claiming that India was continuing to buy Russian oil and that this was supporting Moscow’s war efforts in Ukraine.
