45 arrested in Paris as PSG Champions League celebration turns violent

At least 45 people were arrested in Paris on Saturday after celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory turned into chaos as fires, businesses were destroyed and crowds clashed with police.

Police detained dozens of people in the crowd that gathered in the French capital after PSG’s victory.

A large crowd gathered near the Arc de Triomphe after the game, with some fans lighting flares and honking car horns, the Associated Press reported.

Police worked to control thousands of people gathered on the Champs-Élysées.

A group of people attempted to attack a police station in the French capital late Saturday, according to authorities.

Paris police said that some people damaged stores, set fires and burned vehicles during the events.

Police said a bakery and restaurant were damaged during the mayhem.

Authorities also said the crowd briefly blocked the main ring road surrounding the city before police dispersed the gathering.

One police officer was injured, according to police.

As of 22:00 local time, police arrested at least 45 people.

Celebrations broke out across Paris after PSG defeated Arsenal in the dramatic Champions League final, achieving one of the club’s greatest successes on the European stage.

Violent celebrations also followed PSG’s previous Champions League victory. After the club won the championship last year, 201 people were injured in Paris and more than 500 people were arrested across France.
