As many as 53 candidates are running for 12 seats. Nine of the 12 vacant wards where by-elections were scheduled were held by the BJP. The last local elections were held in December 2022 in 250 seats. There are 115 BJP councilors in the current MCD Assembly after several changes in party position.

The vacant wards include Mundka, Shalimar Bagh-B, Ashok Vihar, Chandni Chowk, Chandni Mahal, Dwarka B, Dichaon Kalan, Naraina, Sangam Vihar-A, Dakshin Puri (SC), Greater Kailash and Vinod Nagar. These wards fall under key Assembly constituencies like Mundka, Wazirpur, Matiala, Najafgarh, Rajender Nagar, Deoli and Patparganj.

BJP aims for a 12-0 win

The BJP aims to gain an absolute majority of 125 in the 250-member Civil Assembly by gaining a 12-0 lead in Sunday’s by-elections. A good performance by the BJP is expected to add to Prime Minister Gupta’s reputation and present a positive public report card for his e-bus, health and insurance welfare schemes and regulations for Chhath devotees.

AAP and Congress

The contest is also vital for the AAP, which currently has 99 councilors and is looking to regain lost ground in city politics after ceding power to the BJP in the Assembly elections held in February this year. The Congress is also trying its best to win a few wards in the by-elections as it wants to stay relevant in city politics currently dominated by the BJP and AAP.

Why are there by-elections in 12 seats?

By-elections were necessary after councilors from these seats were elected to Parliament and the Delhi Assembly in the last 12 months. 11 councilors, including CM Gupta, were elected as Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). Dwarka-B ward has been lying vacant since last year after BJP’s Kamaljeet Sehrawat was elected Member of Parliament from West Delhi.
