70-year-old suspect charged in 1993 Illinois mother’s beating death

More than 30 years after an Illinois mother was found beaten to death in a rural area, authorities Tuesday announced murder charges against a 70-year-old suspect in an unsolved case that investigators say has never stopped haunting the community or the victim’s family.

Albert L. Zigler, 70, of Caseyville, Illinois, is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the 1993 killing of 34-year-old Randy Gail Sperino.

In 1993, Sperino was beaten to death and his body dumped in a field in unincorporated Granite City, Illinois.

Investigators obtained DNA from the scene, but no matches were detected in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). report from the local KMOV output. Othram, a Texas-based genealogy company, recently identified Zigler as a suspect.

More than three decades later, investigators said sufficient evidence has been developed to support the charges against Zigler.

“I thought I could pass and never know, but everything changed because of these guys behind me and next to me,” Wes Sperino said. “I was so excited and immediately cried tears of joy and was shocked when I heard the words ‘We got him’.”
