Revealed: how Albanese tried and failed (so far) to get a meeting with Trump | Australian foreign policy

Anthony Albanese is waiting for the first face -to -face meeting with Donald Trump next week.
According to the documents obtained by the Guardian Australia under the freedom of information, it will be the peak of the diplomatic planning process.
More than 100 pages of government communication revealed the lengths that senior Australian officials went to hold a meeting between Albanian and Trump in June, and then suddenly canceled the G7 to participate in a conflict between Trump, Israel and Iran. The documents reveal the following:
-
The meetings were locked only days ago;
-
The uncertainty of the authorities on the meeting status;
-
The response between the Australian officials when US President canceled meetings with Albania and other world leaders.
When he met Prime Minister Trump last week, he worked as a June duo in the Prime Minister and the Cabinet (PM & C) and Foreign Affairs (DFAT) departments.

Foreign Minister, DFAT and the Prime Ministry department three FOI request, Kananaskis, 103 pages of correspondence about the meeting planned for Canada returned. Almost all correspondence was corrected by departments under the exemption of the Freedom of Information Law, allowing information to be conveyed safely by a foreign government or on behalf of it.
However, US Ambassador Kevin Rudd, DFAT Secretary Jan Adams, Albanian office and senior diplomats, including non -rearranged texts and E -mail chains, announced on June 13th after the meeting was planned on June 18th. Trump suddenly left the G7 on 17 June.
On June 13, an unidentified sender – a text on the signal of messaging to Adams, a senior DFAT official, is probably a senior DFAT official, “Some good news. The meeting has been approved now”.
Another text to Adams is undated, but probably write the same day: “Really satisfied with the approval of the meeting”.
Earlier of that day, the texts between a DFAT official and another unidentified buyer discussed the negotiations for the meeting. The buyer is again a senior bureaucrat.
The DFAT official says “Entertainment. Thank you. I will notify PMC”. The other person was almost completely corrected before the DFAT official was approved for Bilat on Tuesday at 17:00 on Tuesday.
At that time, a few e -mails from Rudd and Rudd were completely corrected.
Due to complex travel programs and packaged routes, it is not unusual to approve the meetings at international conferences close to history. However, the documents also show uncertainty about locking between Australian officials at the meeting.
On June 12, a DFAT secretary said that the White House press secretary Katherine Leavitt spoke about Trump’s G7 meetings. That day, Leavitt said that Trump would meet the “quite few” foreign leaders, which the White House still concluded.
The Deputy Secretary of DFAT wrote: “The White House decided to accept a meeting between the president and the prime minister in Alberta. They didn’t know when the meeting would take place. But that was what they worked for.”
The next day, June 13, Jason Robertson, Vice President of the Australian Embassy in Washington, sent to his senior DFAT officials that Trump’s travel to Canada for the G7 G7 is still continuing ”and the authorities were still working in bilateral meetings”.
Shortly after leaving the Trump G7, DFAT officials wandered the “PM-Trump meeting does not continue” e-mail and “speech points”.
Speech points notes are widespread by politicians and departments to provide a consistent message, explanation or response for developments.
The speech points circulating by DFAT, the Australian officials, “President Trump understands why they understand why they understand why they understand why they understand why they understand that they understand that they understand that they understood” Australia’s reaction to President Trump’s reaction to Prime Minister Trump “
“The meeting between Prime Minister Albania and President Trump could not continue with a few other participants planned by the President.
“Them [Albanese and Trump] Now he spoke on the phone three times – they were all very constructive conversations. “
Not surprisingly, the points of speech closely reflect public reactions from Albanian and other workers’ deputies. Albanian recently spoke to Trump for the fourth time.
Last week, Albanian underestimated the importance of a meeting. On ABC TV, Albanian claimed: “Journalists obsessed with this.”
“We will meet when we meet… People’s arrangements will be finalized when they are finalized.”
