West versus rest as fresh stoush brews over GST spoils

September 24, 2025 19:57 | News

A tax policy against the state against the state is reviewed to ensure the value of money.

Since the Morrison government presented a special agreement to Western Australia in 2018, the carving of income from goods and service tax has been a point of adhesion between states.

The Mining Power Center earns more GST revenues than in other ways of dividing the money. Other states claim that regulation is not fair and now the Federal Productivity Commission has been introduced.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the commission’s investigation would look at whether the current policy is good.

“This study will enable us to have the best system I can pay for schools, hospitals and basic services that Australians need and deserve,” he said.

The Commission was asked to investigate whether the existing rules were financially sustainable for the governments of the State and the British Society of Nations, and whether the alternatives will give a better result.

It will present its final report with an interim report by the end of August by the end of 2026.

In accordance with 2018 reforms, 75 cents are guaranteed from all dollars to all states.

The WA was the only judicial authority that benefited from changes, and since then it has received $ 24 billion more than otherwise.

Other states were guaranteed to the federal government that they would not be left worse than tens of billions of dollars.

The WA government is now establishing a task force to defend the GST share and is called the “Adil Fighter” team.

The State Treasurer Rita Saffoti claimed that it would be forced to protect the existing regulations and that the WA economy helped to subsidize the rest of the nation.

“Without this (GST) agreement, Western Australia would not be able to meet the economic infrastructure or policies that continue to direct our economy and direct new projects without this (GST) agreement.”

“We know that there are some economic commentators who want to withdraw this agreement in the East,” he said.

The NSW Treasurer Daniel Mochey has long complained about the changes of the Morrison government for a long time and described the existing regulations as “a strange system, less support that no one can understand”.

“If we can correct a tired system, we will strongly defend that the entire federation will be better,” he said.
