Controversial Queensland mayor Troy Thompson resigns after corruption inquiry | Queensland

A controversial Mayor of North Queensland accused voters of being misleading about the army service.

In November, Troy Thompson was suspended for full wages, while the Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) conducted an investigation.

Last week, Local Government Minister Ann Leahy published a two -week demonstration to explain why Thompson should not be removed from the role.

In a video published on Facebook on Friday, Thompson announced that he had officially resigned as mayor ”.

“To protect the democratic rights of Townsville people is a deliberate and principled attitude.

“Political intervention has no place in our democracy. Only the community should decide who leads this city.”

For 18 months, Thompson had resisted the widespread, bilateral pressure for the withdrawal of Townsville, including a unanimous vote, including an unanimous vote.

Thompson has recently used Facebook to claim that the demonstration process of the Minister of Local Government is deprived of natural justice.

On Friday, Leahy said Thompson should report any complaint to the CCC or independent evaluator office.

In August, Leahy issued a demonstration notification last week after a briefing from the Corruption Commission.

Townsville said that before voting, “deserves this information”, but CCC, “especially restricting me this information”.

“The street of the release of information is sitting with CCC,” he said.

Leahy said that he hoped to have an election date at the beginning of next week and confirmed that Thompson was entitled to survive.

Acting Townsville Mayor Anne-Mare Greaney said that “the uncertainty and the shadow of the division thrown over our city and our council” was “removed” with the resignation of Thompson.

Greaney said that a election should be held within two months and that the council would hold a special meeting to take into account the voting methodology subject to the approval of the Minister of Local Government on Monday.

On Friday, the Katiter’s Australian Party deputy Nick Dameto announced that he would resign from the state parliament for the Mayor of Townsville. The movement will cause a choice in Hincinbrook’s seat.

Thompson was supported by My Place Townsville in last year’s elections. In 2020, he stood as a single candidate for the state seat of Thushowa, but was disappointed by the party before the election day.

During the election, he claimed that he had spent five years in the army, including time in Sas Sas Swanbourne, in Western Australia. In an interview with an existing incident in May last year, he acknowledged that he served as a reserve for just three years in catering corps.

“Those who know me know that there are more than one shake – 100 plus – and I suffer from epilepsy,” he said.

Thompson was also accused of exaggerating his qualities.
