Fresh search for missing child’s remains in 50-year-old cold case

The police cleared a new area to look for the remnants of a missing child based on a confession more than 50 years ago, but there was still no breakthrough in the cold case.

The three -year -old Cheryl Grimmer disappeared from Wollongong on the southern coast of NSW in 1970, and sparks one of Australia’s longest lost children’s cases.

For the first time on Friday, the police searched for some of the rugged bushes near Fairy Meadow Beach in Wollongong, where Cheryl was last seen.

The site was first announced by a man known under the code name Mercury in a 1971 confession.

His identity was suppressed because the alleged crime was 17 years old.

The explanation was rejected at that time as unreliable and the site was not searched.

Nezly years later, in 2016, Detective Officer Frank Sanvitale confessed to Sanvitale, and a year later he was accused of the murder of Adam Cheryl.

Until 2018, the case collapsed when the Supreme Court’s confession agreed unacceptable.

On Thursday, the police, the 1971 confession of the site is now “interest” reported.

The police first arrived at Balgownie, 3 km west of Peri Meadow Beach, with a cadaver dog team at 11.30 on Friday.

However, the police in the afternoon, confirmed that the search ended without a breakthrough.

“Bones were found and photographed in the search for the bones. After the expert advice, the bones were confirmed to belong to an animal,” he said.

“The search resulted.

“The investigation into the kidnapping and suspicious murder of Cheryl Grimmer continues to be an active investigation by the NSW Police Murder Team’s unresolved murder unit.

“For information, a $ 1 million reward remained, everyone with information is asked to contact with criminal stops at 1800 333 000.”
