American confused as British wife calls £1.50 treat ‘posh’ | Weird | News

The ever-popular dessert, which has been a fixture in British families for more than 40 years and can be had for just a handful of dollars, left an American man stunned when his wife described it as “luxurious”. Adam posts on social media under the name yankeedoodleintheuk, where he regularly shares amusing observations about life in the UK as an expat.
She recently shared this surprising story on Instagram, asking for other people’s opinions in a video with the caption: “I didn’t realize this was this important… I was doing it wrong.” “I didn’t realize it was such a luxury,” he said.
“We had our spaghetti with bolognese last night and we’re ready for our pudding. So I went into the kitchen, rummaged through the freezer and pulled out some food. And my wife said: ‘What’s the special occasion?’ I said: ‘Is it a special day? What do you mean?’
“Before this I went to Tesco and found this pudding. I think it was around £1.50. I’ve had this before, it’s delicious.
“I never knew this was considered a luxury. Now if you’re considering this luxury I need your opinion.”
He then revealed the dessert in question: the legendary mint-flavored Viennetta ice cream. Launched in 1982 by UK ice cream company Wall’s, Viennetta is a rectangular-shaped ice cream cake with a wavy, accordion-like pattern, giving it a sophisticated, fancy look despite its cheap price.
The man continued: “He said: ‘When we were growing up we only made this on very special occasions. It was considered a fancy pudding and maybe if we had guests or something we’d bring out the Viennetta.’
“And I can kind of see where he’s coming from. It looks kind of fancy. It’s cool. But it’s also almost like a deconstructed chocolate ice.”
In closing he said: “I’m just having a Viennetta at your house, right? That’s a special enough occasion for me.”
People in the comments agreed that Viennetta was the pinnacle of sophistication. One of them said: “You can’t make Viennetta on a random Wednesday! Only during party times!”
Another wrote: “Absolutely sumptuous and wonderful treat as a kid. As an adult, it’s as simple as anything but still feels strangely luxurious. I haven’t had something like this in mind for years but I think I’ll have an Easter treat!”
Another said: “We used to do it on Christmas Day (and only on Christmas Day!)” And another said: “We only do it when the Queen visits us.”
A different user said: “All you had to mention was ‘freezer’ and ‘luxury’ and I guarantee every over 35 person in the UK knew it was a Viennetta.”
And another said: “What’s next? Colin the Caterpillar, unless it’s someone’s birthday?”
