Indian Railways will allow change of travel dates on confirmed tickets
The biggest problem for travelers is that their plans change very quickly. To eliminate this problem, Indian Railways has come up with a new policy that will allow passengers to change their plans without losing money. From January 2026, passengers will be able to change their travel dates online without paying any fee, even if they have confirmed train tickets, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told NDTV.
Until now, if travel dates changed, passengers had to cancel their ticket and buy a new one, which cost half or nearly half the cost depending on how many days the passenger had until the cancellation fee. Doing so would not only be a hassle for the passenger, but would also be very costly. “This system is unfair and not in the interest of passengers,” Vaishnaw said. He made a positive statement that the railways had received instructions to implement new, passenger-friendly changes.
Further criticizing the old system, the Railway Minister said that there was no guarantee whether new tickets would be purchased because there was a dependency factor. In this case, if the price of the current ticket is higher, the ticket may cost the passenger more. But with the new policy, millions of passengers will be saved from ticket booking, extra costs and much more hassle as train rescheduling can be done more easily without affecting the journey or cost.
Under current rules, canceling a confirmed ticket 48 to 12 hours before departure results in a 25 percent deduction from the ticket price. Fees increase for cancellations made between 12 and 4 hours before departure. After the reservation table is created, cancellations are generally non-refundable.
