Antropic, Alphabet’s artificial intelligence startup backed by Google and Amazon.com, said on Tuesday it will open its first office in India next year to tap the country’s growing appetite for AI tools.
India has emerged as Antropic’s second largest market for consumer use of Claude, its large language model that competes with Openai’s chatgpt. Claude has carved out a niche, distinguishing himself in the crowded AI landscape, by demonstrating strong abilities in coding.
The $183 billion company said its co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei will visit India this week to meet public officials and corporate partners.
The new office will be located in Bengaluru, known as a technology hub in India, and will begin operations in early 2026, the company said. The location will serve as its second office in the Asia Pacific region after Tokyo, he added.
Backed by Microsoft, Openai was officially registered as an entity in India in August and has begun building a local team. It then plans to open its first India office in New Delhi in 2025.
The company is facing strong competition in India from the likes of Google’s Gemini and AI Startup dazzle, both of which have launched offers that make their advanced plans free for many users in the market.
