Player moves, deals, pick trades and more as Clayton Oliver, Charlie Curnow, Christian Petracca, Zach Merrett could find new clubs

An AFL investigation found Geelong did not breach salary cap rules but the club was fined almost $80,000 for administrative errors, half of which was suspended.

The league said Wednesday the Cats did not break the salary cap or player movement rules following a review of the period from 2019 to 2024.

“Based on information obtained and reviewed by the AFL, it has ensured that the club did not breach the AFL TPP limit or the AFL player movement rules in any season during the assessed time period,” the statement said.

However, the audit discovered a number of disclosures and/or late disclosures of agreements with club partners and third parties.

“In relation to the AFLW programme, the disclosings identified were found to be administrative errors and did not amount to material breaches of the TPP rules or player movement rules,” the AFL said.

Cats was fined $77,500, suspended $40,000 for two years and given a host of extra requirements to comply with.

“The AFL acknowledges the club’s cooperation in voluntarily agreeing to the conduct of the enhanced inspection process and the manner in which it participates in that process.”

The Cats said they accepted the AFL’s sanctions for “disclosure errors”.

“The club and its staff cooperated fully throughout the audit process and worked closely with the AFL and EY to provide access, documentation and information in a transparent manner as required,” Cats chief Steve Hocking said.

“We accept that the outcome of the audit confirms that the club did not breach the AFL TPP limits or the AFL player movement rules.

“We also acknowledge that the audit identified a number of privacy items over a six-year period. We accept the AFL’s sanctions for these failures and will strengthen our training and governance processes moving forward.”
