Cody Bellinger makes acrobatic catch in Yankees home opener vs Marlins

Gold Glove-winning outfielder Cody Bellinger made a compelling case for the catch of the year in the New York Yankees’ home opener against the Miami Marlins on Friday.

The highlight reel catch came in the ninth inning on a deep drive by Marlins infielder Xavier Edwards.

Bellinger ran 62 feet and tracked the ball well, but he misjudged it at the last moment and the ball flew off his ankle. Midway through the jump, he swung his arm and caught the ball at knee height.

Fans at Yankee Stadium rose to their feet when they saw Bellinger staring at his glove in disbelief, but the former Los Angeles Dodgers star didn’t call the stunt anything other than his smartest play.

“I should have caught it the first time,” he said, adding that he “tightened” his glove too soon.

“I definitely got lucky. I threw my glove in there.”

The Yankees are off to their second 6-1 start in three seasons after Aaron Judge hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the first inning to help the team to an 8-2 lead over the Marlins in the Bronx.
