Ruben Amorim: Manchester United boss needs three years to prove himself a ‘great’ coach, says co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Last month, United announced it had reduced its losses for the period to June 2025 from £113.2 million to £33 million.

This follows two rounds of layoffs in which more than 400 people lost their jobs, including many long-term staff. Scouting is among the areas where numbers are decreasing.

Ratcliffe has been criticized for job losses as well as the cancellation of long-standing benefits such as free lunches for staff.

“The costs were too high,” he said. “There are great people at Manchester United but there was also a bit of mediocrity and it had become bloated.

“I’ve gotten a lot of flak for free lunch, but no one has ever given me a free lunch.

“A football team has two halves, the business side and the sports side. Like it or not, the biggest correlation between results and any external factor is profitability. The more money you have, the better squad you can build.

“If you look at last year’s results, we have the highest revenue ever. Profitability is the second highest ever. These numbers will get even better.

“In my view, Manchester United will be the most profitable football club in the world and I hope that long-term, sustainable, high-level football will emerge from this.”
