Karur stampede hearing LIVE: Supreme Court to hear TVK’s plea challenging High Court order to set up SIT

The Supreme Court will hear a plea filed by Tamil actor Vijay’s political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, challenging the Madras High Court order to constitute an SIT to investigate the Karur stampede in which 41 people died.

A bench comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and NV Anjaria is scheduled to hear the matter based on the apex court’s list of reasons.

The TVK demanded an independent investigation under the supervision of the Supreme Court, arguing that a fair and impartial investigation would not be possible if it was conducted only by officers of the Tamil Nadu Police.

The plea has challenged the high court’s formation of a special investigation team (SIT) comprising only officers of the Tamil Nadu Police.
