Attempts on to control LPG crisis, says Union Minister Suresh Gopi

Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi on Thursday, March 12, 2026, said that efforts to contain the LPG crisis are continuing and avenues have been opened for India to provide additional supplies.

Speaking to reporters in Thrissur, Kerala, Mr. Gopi said Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had answered questions on the LPG crisis in Parliament on Wednesday.

He said that “some issues regarding supplies from the Strait of Hormuz cannot be disclosed due to diplomatic sensitivities.”

Mr. Gopi said, “The Prime Minister discussed with all countries how the Strait of Hormuz issue affects lives and asked for exemption. I am not giving the exact data, but ways are being opened for us to buy more LPG.”

He said priority was given to emergency services such as hospitals and crematoriums.

“As the Ministry, we think the situation is under control. However, we do not have the right to control some technical issues outside the country,” he said.

He said that the LPG crisis affects daily life in many countries. “Attempts are being made to overcome this. It will be under control,” he said.

Mr. Gopi said that there is a mechanism to regulate gas prices and steps are being taken as per its directions.

‘The right to fix prices with companies’

He added that oil companies are given the right to set prices because they are public sector entities.

“How can you say that since Prime Minister Modi is in power, he should step back? The whole system is working perfectly. The Strait of Hormuz is strategically critical for us,” he said.

He said India cannot go to war with other countries over the Strait of Hormuz.

He said that he, along with the majority of the public, was “against the war”.

Mr. Gopi said all efforts are on to resolve the LPG crisis.

He said that the administration has the right to take crisis management measures during the Covid period, and that this does not depend only on the Ministry.

He said that they are trying to reopen restaurants that were closed due to gas shortage by finding a solution.

“There may be strikes to protest the crisis. However, in this critical situation, the whole world must go on strike,” he said.

He added that in times of crisis, people must restrict themselves, just as seen during the Covid era and in times of war.
