Ricky Hatton’s legendary career
Hatton’s action-packed style earned him 45 wins and three defeats in 48 contests, but it was his down-to-earth attitude that particularly endeared him to his fellow pros and fans around the world.
This was proven when tens of thousands of people followed him to Las Vegas; where he fought two of the greatest fighters of his era, Floyd Mayweather and Pacquiao; There were stories of fans in the UK singing ‘there’s only one Ricky Hatton’ and drinking Sin City dry booze in boxing folklore.
Hatton’s standout victory was perhaps his stoppage of Kostya Tszyu in Manchester in 2005.
Hatton suffered his first professional defeat in 2007 when he was stopped by Mayweather; Pacquiao’s violent second-round knockout two years later accelerated his decline from top-flight boxing.
A misguided comeback attempt against Vyacheslav Senchenko in 2012 marked Hatton’s first public admission that he was struggling to cope with retirement.
