Nobel Peace Prize chief issues statement after awards snub Donald Trump | World | News

In the face of White House outrage, the Nobel Peace Prize president attempted to justify denying President Trump the gong despite his work in brokering the Israel-Hamas peace deal. Trump has never hidden the prestigious humanitarian award, which was given to four previous American presidents, including Barack Obama, who Trump said “received an award for doing nothing.”

Donald Trump’s administration said his record earned him a Nobel Peace Prize and claimed he had ended seven wars, eight of which included the continuation of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire. These wars or conflicts also include; Israel-Iran, India-Pakistan, Democratic Republic of Congo-Rwanda, Cambodia-Thailand, Egypt-Ethiopia, Armenia-Azerbaijan and Serbia-Kosovo.

However, the head of the Norwegian Nobel committee, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, announced today (Friday) that the Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. Shortly after, Tump shared a clip on social media in which he was compared to Winston Churchill.

In the video featuring Fox News correspondent Newt Gingrich, he was seen saying, “I think President Trump is now on his way to becoming a world figure like President Franklin Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill.”

“President Trump will continue to make peace agreements, end wars, and save lives around the world,” White House spokesman Steven Cheung said in a post on X Friday morning. “The Nobel Committee has proven that it puts politics above peace,” he added.

When asked about lobbying for and on behalf of President Trump to win the award, Mr. Watne Frydnes said: “I think this committee has seen all kinds of campaigning and media attention. Every year we get thousands and thousands of letters from people who want to say what will lead to peace for them.”

“This committee sits in a room full of portraits of all the laureates, and this room is filled with both courage and integrity. So we base our decision solely on the work and will of Alfred Nobel.”

Hours after Friday’s announcement, Ms. Machado wrote to He added: “I dedicate this award to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his steadfast support of our cause!”

The peace prize is one of the annual Nobel prizes awarded in Oslo, Norway. Other awards are given for physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences.

The Nobel Prize was established when Swedish businessman and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel died and left most of his fortune to prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace.

Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, stated in his will that awards should be given to “those who have provided the greatest benefit to humanity in the previous year.”
