Centre Urges States to Adopt UPI for School Fee Payments

New Delhi: The Union education ministry has asked states to streamline fee collection processes in schools using UPI to increase transparency and provide convenience to parents. In a first-of-its-kind move, the Ministry of Education’s Department of School Education and Literacy is seeking to capitalize on the growing penetration of digital payment platforms such as UPI, mobile wallets and online banking.

He has written to states and other stakeholders, asking them to promote the adoption of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to strengthen ease of schooling by streamlining administrative processes, especially related to financial transactions in schools.

The ministry has encouraged states and autonomous bodies under the ministry, such as the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), to explore and implement mechanisms that will enable schools to collect admission and examination fees through secure and transparent digital modes.

According to the statement, the letter states that the transition from cash-based payments to digital payments offers many advantages. It provides convenience, transparency and the ability for parents and students to make payments from home without visiting schools.

The move towards digital payments in schools will be an important step in aligning education management with the government’s broader digital transformation goal, the ministry said. “This will also enable all stakeholders to become more financially savvy, thus paving the way for a greater world of digital transactions,” the statement said. The statement was included.
