Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzya, accused the United States of preparing for a military intervention against Venezuela under the guise of anti-drug operations, saying that this was a dangerous provocation that threatened the stability of Latin America. Speaking at the UN Security Council, Nebenzya claimed that Washington had deployed destroyers, submarines and 4,000 troops near Venezuelan waters and had spun a “Hollywood-style” narrative around the so-called “Sun Cartel”. He warned that US “lawlessness” and “cowboy principles” could spark a regional crisis and called on Latin American countries to reject American intervention and defend their sovereignty under the 2014 CELAC “peace zone” declaration.
