British tourists in Majorca told ‘do not go out’ as warning in place | World | News

British tourists in Majorca were given a stern warning this weekend. Authorities are urging holidaymakers and locals not to go out with a series of warnings implemented across the Balearic Islands.

This comes as Storm Alice continues to ravage the region, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Spanish weather agency AEMET activated an orange alert in Majorca on Saturday, October 11, as turbulent weather affected the region in the early morning hours. While the warning continues until 20:00 in the east, northeast and north of the island, emergency services are calling against unnecessary travel. Forecasters predict that the heaviest showers will hit tourist spots such as Alcudia, Arta and Pollensa.

As reported by Majorca Daily BulletinPeople on the island are also urged against outdoor activities. Santa Eulària City Council suspended all sports and cultural activities due to bad weather conditions.

An alarm is also sounded in Ibiza and Formentera. Heavy rains in the region caused floods in many places.

Forecasters expect up to 250mm of rain to fall on the islands by Sunday. Due to the storm, some tourists were stranded on Costa Blanca and flights were cancelled.

This follows the hurricane that hit Cartagena, Murcia on Friday, October 10th, which forced 67 people to evacuate the area. Authorities issued a red alert in the region due to the storm and warned of “extraordinary danger”.

Meanwhile, schools in the Levante region also had to suspend classes. About 10 inches of rain also hit Alicante when the storm arrived Thursday.

The local Alicante fire department was called to 31 emergency operations, including the removal of debris from flooded roads. A total of 142 incidents were recorded in Murcia.

Video footage shows roads in the area heavily flooded and campsites submerged. Tourists are asked to be careful as the storm continues to affect the region.

Pablo Gárriz, General Director of Emergencies and Internal Affairs, said: “The situation that worries us most at the moment is in the municipalities where we have identified the possibility of heavy rain, so an orange alert has been issued.”
