San Francisco 49ers star linebacker Fred Warner suffered a gruesome ankle injury against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon that caused him to miss a jump ball and was thrown off the field.
The injury occurred midway through the first quarter when Buccaneers running back Rachaad White made a 10-yard run when Buccaneers running back Ji’Ayir Brown tackled him. However, as Brown tried to bring White down to the turf, he rolled onto Warner and his ankle appeared to be trapped under his body.
A video review showed the brutal nature of the injury, with both 49ers and Buccaneers players gesturing to the sideline for medical personnel to quickly exit. Buccaneers player Tez Johnson was one of them, and even put his hands on his helmet in disbelief after seeing Warner’s injury up close.

It wasn’t long before the 49ers’ medical staff gave Warner a jump ball and he was behind a car heading into the tunnel. Warner looked in disbelief as he looked out onto the field.
If the injury is serious enough to end Warner’s season, this will be another critical defensive piece the 49ers team loses for the remainder of the season.

San Francisco has already lost star linebacker Nick Bosa, who tore his ACL in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals. Warner, a middle linebacker who is the 49ers’ defensive captain, would be a huge loss.

Warner came into this game leading the 49ers in steals (50) and ranked second on the team in passes defended (3). Warner also forced two fumbles and recovered one this season.
