President Donald Trump said Wednesday he may appeal to the Supreme Court. verbal arguments in a major tariff case that could decide the fate of the protectionist trade agenda in its current form.

“There’s a big case coming up in the Supreme Court, and let me tell you, it’s one of the most important cases in the history of our country,” Trump said in his speech in the Oval Office.

“If we don’t win this case, we will be weakened, distressed and in a financial mess for many years to come,” he said.

Trump stated that he did not do this for other important cases and said, “That’s why I think I will go to the Supreme Court to monitor the proceedings in the case.”

The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for additional comment on Trump’s remarks.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments on November 5 in the tariff case known as VOS Selections v. Trump.

The case focuses on whether the law Trump used to impose the largest country-specific tariff policies, including so-called reciprocal tariffs and fentanyl-related taxes, actually permits these trade actions.
