Will Trump’s H-1B visa fee hike impact Wipro? Here’s what IT giant’s HR chief says
Wipro, India’s fourth largest IT services company, announced its September quarter (QFY26) earnings on Thursday, October 16. Following the earnings announcement, the IT expert touched on the recent changes announced to the H-1B visa system by the Donald Trump administration.
What did Wipro say about the H-1B visa fee hike?
Wipro noted that 80% of its US employees are locals, and that changes to the H-1B program will have a minor business impact due to its ongoing localization strategy.
Speaking about the H-1B visa fee hike, Wipro Chief Human Resources Officer Saurabh Govil said that the company has taken a focused and purposeful approach to localize its workforce in the US over the last few years. “So today, almost 80% of our U.S. employee base is local, and we believe the business impact with the change to the H-1B program will be very limited. We have more than enough ways to manage the change,” Govil said.
In September, US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation increasing the fee for H1-B visas to $100,000, sending shockwaves through the tech industry that is heavily dependent on these visas.
Wipro is recruiting
The tech giant reported hiring 2,900 new people in the quarter despite lower attrition and increased usage. Hiring will continue based on demand despite fewer workdays, with a focus on campus recruiting through the third quarter of fiscal year 2025-26.
“If you look at our numbers, we went for on-campus recruiting. We hired about 2,900 new students this quarter. This is despite a lower attrition than the previous quarter and better utilization in terms of the human supply chain. And we’ll continue to hire based on demand. We’ll continue to look at campuses in Q3,” Govil said.
The IT giant’s voluntary employee attrition rate fell to 14.9% in September 2025 from 15.1% in the previous June quarter. This shows that fewer employees have left the company over the past year than trailing twelve month (LTM) data, as reported in the company’s regulatory filing.
The total number of employees as of September 30, 2025 increased from 233,232 at the end of June 2025 to 235,492, a net decrease of 2,260 employees in this quarter.
Will there be a wage increase at Wipro?
Wipro noted that no decision has been made regarding the wage increase yet, and information will be shared when the decision is finalized.
Talking about the wage hike, Govil said, “We have not received a call yet. As soon as we get a call, we will let everyone know, but we have not decided when.”
