Former New York Rep. George Santos has been officially released from prison following President Donald Trump’s decision to commute his sentence. Santos now describes his gratitude to the president, his renewed faith, and his plans for the future.
Santos stated that he spent 41 days in solitary confinement while serving his sentence, during which he claimed that he was not given a Bible or a rosary, but he still reconnected with God through prayer.
“I have a lot to prove to a lot of people, and I have to make President Trump understand that I will not let him down,” Santos said during “Fox & Friends Weekend”, saying his release was a “second chance.”

Santos was serving a seven-year prison sentence in New Jersey for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
The notorious fabulist admitted to embellishing large portions of his life story and resume and was expelled from Congress in 2023 amid investigations into his criminal behavior.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that he believed the sentence was too long. The president announced the sentence reduction Friday, ordering Santos’ immediate release from federal prison.

“George Santos was something of a ‘thug,’ but there are plenty of thugs in our country who didn’t get seven years in prison,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“George has been held in solitary confinement for too long and has been subjected to horrific mistreatment from every angle. That’s why I just signed a Commutation that IMMEDIATELY releases George Santos from prison.”
Santos said he experienced an intense spiritual moment just a day before his release.

“From the moment I entered prison, I discovered that there was a visiting priest, a Catholic priest who came every Thursday,” he said.
Santos said he was placed in solitary confinement after he began attending mass.

“I connected with God, I reconnected with myself, I started praying very deeply,” he said of his time in prison.
Santos said he saw the timing of his release as a sign from God because it came only a day later.
He said that once he was released from solitary confinement, he went to mass, attended confession and received the Eucharist. He said he was notified the next day that he had been released from prison.
“The day before, 100%,” he said. “There were many witnesses who were with me at that service.”
Beyond his renewed faith, Santos said he plans to dedicate his second chance to criminal justice reform.
“When I spoke to President Trump yesterday, I told him my commitment would be to prison reform,” Santos said.
