Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Indians to celebrate the festive season by embracing ‘Swadeshi’ products and emphasized national pride in local craftsmanship and innovation. Sharing a post on X late on Saturday, Prime Minister Modi urged the country’s 140 crore citizens to celebrate Diwali by buying Indian-made products and proudly shouted “Garv Se Kaho Yeh Swadeshi Hai!” (Proudly say it’s Swadeshi!). It has spurred a wave of support for indigenous artisans and producers by encouraging them to share their purchases on social media to inspire others.

The Prime Minister’s message quoted a live video from MyGovIndia featuring Bollywood stars like Varun Dhawan, Madhuri Dixit, Tripti Dimri, Anupam Kher, Sunil Grover and Rupali Ganguly along with singer Shankar Mahadevan. Set in bustling markets adorned with lights, the two-minute video clip depicts families shopping for sweets, saris, shoes and electronics, all labeled ‘Made in India’. It highlights local landmarks like the Men’s Collection in Old Delhi, Mandore Bazar in Jodhpur, the Lighthouse on Rajpur Road in Dehradun and the Pure Education Collection in Kolkata’s Tollygunge.

The viral video encourages the purchase of domestic vehicles prepared by Indian youth, devices such as TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, smartphones and laptops. It culminates in the ‘Vocal for Local’ mantra, which encourages sharing of selfies with products or artisans on the NaMo app, with PM Modi promising to republish selected entries. This initiative is in line with Prime Minister Modi’s long-running ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) campaign, which was launched in 2020 amid the pandemic to increase domestic production and reduce imports.

Experts say this could boost the economy, especially during Diwali, when consumer spending rises by 20-30 percent as per industry estimates. This move comes as India aims to reduce dependence on imports. Social media was full of reactions ranging from support to criticism towards imported luxury products. As festivals approach, PM Modi’s call is resonating, potentially leading to a ‘Swadeshi’ shopping spree.
