Work on laying a new 24 km water pipeline between Sathanur dam and Tiruvannamalai town, which will provide 135 liters per person per day (LPCD) per day to every household in Tiruvannamalai, is nearing completion, providing convenience to hundreds of consumers in the temple town.
Tiruvannamalai Corporation officials said the work was done at ₹ 55.49 crore under the Urban Infrastructure Development Plan 2023-24. Tiruvannamalai Corporation Commissioner S. Selva Balaji said, “Work is being done on the 550-meter water pipeline, especially on Tendrampattu Road. The entire work will be completed this month. The new pipelines will prevent frequent pipe bursts and water leakage.” Hindu
Collector K. Tharpagaraj along with Corporation and State Highways officials inspected the ongoing water pipeline works in the town. Corporation officials said that the existing water pipelines laid many years ago on the Tiruvannamalai – Aroor High Road, which is maintained by the State Highways, have been replaced with new pipelines. “The new pipeline needs to be commissioned soon to ensure regular water supply to the tail end areas in the town. This will also help in preventing water pollution due to pipeline leakage,” said B. Mahesh, a resident of the area.
Taking advantage of the widening of the existing two-lane Tiruvannamalai-Aroor Elevated Road to four lanes, the civic body has decided to lay new water pipelines to avoid road opening expenses, corporation officials said. Old water pipelines were laid in the middle of the road. As a result, new, more durable water pipelines are being laid at the far end of the road to prevent damage from vehicles.
Company officials said that the municipality managed to produce only 18 MLD water per day for its 31,000 consumers against the daily water demand of 22 MLD. Transit losses due to frequent pipe bursts and depletion of water resources are the reasons for the gap between supply and demand. New water pipelines will provide regular water supply to residents.
