Earthquake of magnitude 4.7 strikes Pakistan, third in three days

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), a magnitude 4.7 earthquake occurred in Pakistan on Monday. The fact that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers made the region vulnerable to aftershocks. The agency said in a post about Moderate earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 occurred in Pakistan on Saturday and Sunday.

Shallow earthquakes can sometimes be more dangerous than deep earthquakes. This is because seismic waves from shallow earthquakes have a shorter distance to reach the surface, resulting in stronger ground shaking and potentially more damage to structures and more casualties. Pakistan is among the seismically active countries in the world where many important fault lines intersect. This collision zone makes the country highly vulnerable to severe earthquakes.

Provinces such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan are located at the southern edge of the Eurasian plate, while Sindh and Punjab are located at the northwestern edge of the Indian plate, resulting in frequent earthquakes. Balochistan is located near the active boundary between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Punjab, located at the northwestern edge of the Indian plate, is also susceptible to seismic activities. Although Sindh is less prone, it is still at risk due to its location. Balochistan was shaken by a massive earthquake of 8.1 magnitude in 1945.
