Two senior officers of Assam Police reached Singapore on Monday (October 20, 2025) to investigate the death of singer Zubeen Garg in the island nation last month, officials said.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) under Assam Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is currently investigating Garg’s death case after more than 60 FIRs were lodged across the state.
According to a senior official, CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta and Titabor Co-District SP Tarun Goel reached Singapore in a flight from Guwahati. While Mr Gupta heads the nine-member SIT, Mr Goel is also a member of it.
Another official said two SIT members will visit “the crime scene where Garg breathed his last”. “Linking the sequence of events to the place where it occurred is one of the most important aspects of the entire investigation process. Also, the Assam Police team will sit with their counterparts in Singapore to discuss the incident,” he said.
The famous singer died mysteriously while swimming in the sea in Singapore on September 19. He had gone to the Southeast Asian country to participate in the 4th edition of the North East India Festival.
The SIT will also meet the yacht pilot and attendant to know the exact details of the incident, the official said. “They will probably visit the five-star hotel where Garg was staying. They will try to examine the incident from every angle,” he said.
The Indian government had previously sought cooperation in the investigation into the singer’s death by applying for the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) is also conducting an independent investigation into the incident.
The SPF said in a statement on October 17 that preliminary investigations did not indicate any malice in Garg’s death. It was also stated that investigations into the death of the popular Indian singer-songwriter-composer may take up to three months, after which the findings will be submitted to the State Coroner’s Office for further proceedings.
Assam Police has interrogated 10 of the 11 Singaporean Assamese expatriates against whom summonses have been issued, while the rest are citizens of the Southeast Asian country.
A yacht was booked by several officials of Assam Association Singapore and these 11 people were there when Garg allegedly drowned in the sea.
Earlier, North East India Festival’s chief organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma and two band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta were arrested.
Later, Garg’s cousin and Assam Police (DSP) Sandipan Garg was arrested in connection with the singer’s death in Singapore in September.

Zubeen Garg’s PSOs Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya were also arrested after police found huge financial transactions worth ₹ 1.1 crore in their accounts.
All 7 people taken into custody were sent to the courthouse. They were charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on charges of murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy and causing death by negligence.
