One of the men on board was rescued by another boat. There was no serious injury and the incident was attended by medical teams.

The other occupant of the boat, a man in his 20s, is still missing.

A spokesman said when the alarm was raised, a search began immediately, involving the Water Police and Air Wing, as well as Life Saving Victoria, the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service and the coastguard.

Two men drowned at Frankston Pier on Wednesday after one of the men’s surfboard broke and his friend jumped into the wild seas to save him.

A police rescuer was also taken to hospital after swallowing water after climbing down from a helicopter to pull the men out of the turbulent sea.

The surfer was a 36-year-old British national who was learning to surf, and his friend was a 43-year-old man. Both men were residents of Frankston.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or log in. www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
