The gorgeous little town with pretty cobbled streets frozen in time | UK | News

There is an amazing town in Europe that is so well preserved you have to see it to believe it. Europe is full of popular towns and cities that Brits visit every year. Popular city breaks include places like Vienna, Madrid, Prague and Berlin. Meanwhile, there are also plenty of wonderful holiday destinations to which Brits regularly flock, particularly in Spain, Portugal, France and Greece. However, there are also places worth seeing that you have never heard of.

One of these is a town in Germany that is criminally overlooked by British tourists. When you arrive, you won’t believe how picture perfect it is. One TikTok user even described it as a place that looked like it was taken from a picture book. There are many generally underrated villages, towns and cities in Germany. And this may be the most beautiful and well-kept place in the city. While we love the excitement of Berlin and the beer gardens of Munich, this place has a unique charm.

The name of the town in question is Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This town is home to just over 11,000 people, making it relatively small compared to other popular tourist destinations in the country.

It is located in Northern Bavaria and its nearest major cities are Nuremberg and Stuttgart. So, if you were traveling from the UK you would most likely fly direct to Munich or Stuttgart and then take the train into the city.

There’s so much to see and do while you’re there. Apart from the historical charm of this place with its centuries-old buildings, cobblestone streets and charming shops, there are also some of the most popular tourist attractions to see and experience.

Top things to do in Rothenburg ob der Tauber include the Blade Gate, City Hall Walls, Rothenburg Town Hall, Medieval Crime and Justice Museum, and Rothenburg City History Museum.

By the way, there are many cafes and restaurants where you can drink great coffee and try local cuisine. The town has received rave reviews from people who have visited it.

One TripAdvisor reviewer wrote: “My wife and I visited Rothenberg last September and loved it. Yes, there were lots of tourists during the day (busloads, literally), and I found it wonderful to wander around the town all day. Once you got away from the city centre, it didn’t feel touristy at all. In the evening we sat at an outdoor cafe in the center and had some great people watching and meeting.”

Meanwhile, one Yelp user said: “A cute town like a German Christmas postcard! Definitely a must-visit. If you’re staying in the city, I think 1 night is enough to get everything done.”

Another said: “Very interesting, even if it’s full of tourists. There’s not actually a lot of car traffic; it’s mostly foot traffic because the inside of the wall is so walkable, that’s what you do!”

A third shared: “A fascinating, largely preserved, medieval walled city in Central Franconia (in the Ansbach District of Northern Bavaria). The walls with their roof/side coverings surround this city and you can still walk through parts of the city. It’s fun to imagine being a medieval archer patrolling along the wall, aiming his arrows through the slits.”
